GREAT MILLS, Md. — A Great Mills single-vehicle crash has left one person unconscious and prompted an emergency medevac to a regional trauma center on Saturday afternoon. The incident involved a car striking a utility pole, which required a significant emergency response.
The collision happened on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at approximately 2:29 p.m. Emergency units rushed to the scene at the complex intersection of Flat Iron Road, Indian Bridge Road, and Old Great Mills Road. Upon arrival, first responders confirmed a single vehicle had struck a pole. Consequently, they found the sole occupant of the vehicle unconscious.
Due to the critical nature of the patient’s injuries, crews on the scene immediately requested a flyout. In addition, firefighters from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department established a secure landing zone at their station on Point Lookout Road to accommodate the Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter. Meanwhile, medical personnel provided advanced life support to the patient while awaiting the medevac’s arrival.
The latest update from the scene confirmed the medevac is en route to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, a designated trauma facility for the most critical patients. Therefore, this Great Mills single-vehicle crash is now under investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to determine the cause.
Authorities advise motorists to expect significant delays in the area and to use alternate routes if possible while crews operate and police conduct their investigation. This is a developing story and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
UPDATE [3:45 PM]: The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office advised at 3:34 p.m. that all lanes of MD Route 5 (Point Lookout Road) in the area of the crash have been reopened to traffic. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
