HOLLYWOOD, Md. — CVS Pharmacy will permanently close its Hollywood, Maryland, store at 24288 Three Notch Road on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. The decision comes as part of CVS Health’s broader initiative, launched in 2021, to downsize its national retail presence by approximately 900 stores over three years, a move aimed at adjusting to shifting consumer behaviors and market demands.
The Hollywood location is one of several in Maryland affected by this strategy. Recently, CVS closed its store on Laurel-Bowie Road in Bowie in December 2024, and the downtown Cumberland location on Baltimore Street also ceased operations. These closures reflect wider changes in the retail pharmacy sector, where major chains are responding to evolving consumer preferences and increased competition from online retailers.
Other pharmacy giants are also making similar moves. Walgreens has announced plans to shut down up to 1,300 stores over the next three years, while Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in 2023, leading to numerous store closures nationwide. These decisions are influenced by economic pressures, shifting demographics, and the growing popularity of digital health services.
CVS Health is not only reducing the number of its stores but also transforming its remaining locations to focus more on health services. The company plans to develop three distinct store formats: primary care sites, HealthHUB locations for everyday health and wellness needs, and traditional CVS Pharmacy outlets. This restructuring aims to meet the changing needs of consumers and provide more integrated health solutions in a dynamic market environment.
