LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A proposed splash pad at Leonardtown’s Miedzinski Park has taken a key step forward after appearing in the governor’s recommended budget, according to updates shared during a St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board meeting this week.
Recreation and Parks Director Ray Bivins told board members Thursday night that the project is listed for a $300,000 state grant, a sign that the county and the town of Leonardtown have advanced the proposal through the state funding process. While inclusion in the governor’s recommended budget does not guarantee final approval, officials described it as an encouraging milestone.
The planned splash pad would be a smaller version of the popular water feature at Nicolet Park and would provide children with a place to cool off during the summer months. County officials emphasized the project’s focus on accessible, family-friendly recreation.
In addition to the Leonardtown proposal, the department has also submitted a separate grant request to replace the entire splash pad at Nicolet Park, a larger and more extensive project that remains under review.
Final funding decisions will be made as the state budget moves through the General Assembly in the coming months.
