SUITLAND, Md. – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General today released the body-worn camera footage of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s (PGPD) fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 1, 2024, in Suitland, Maryland. The decedent was previously identified as 31-year-old Melvin Jay of Suitland.

On February 1, 2024, at approximately 5:25 p.m., PGPD officers responded to an apartment in the 5100 block of Suitland Road in Suitland, after receiving a 911 call from a resident for a report of a breaking and entering in-progress at their home.

Upon arriving on scene, one officer entered the residence where he encountered Mr. Jay and began giving him commands. During the encounter, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Mr. Jay, who was pronounced dead on scene. No officers were injured.

Two handguns were recovered from the scene, one in Mr. Jay’s pocket and the second in the kitchen sink. The IID has identified Mr. Jay as a resident of the home. Mr. Jay was not the original 911 caller.

The Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal shooting.

  1. This is how you cause your own death by not listening to an officers commands .
The male went into the kitchen area out of view of the officer, apparently in an attempt to get the gun from his jacket.
If he had obeyed officers commands he would be alive …Yet maybe that gun would be tied to a murder , hence a reason to pull the gun from the jacket and shoot it out with a trained officer …
Point in fact the decedent has made some fatal decisions ..
Another lesson learned ,,,for only a few

    1. look close as back up two officers as they came through door , first one did not have her weapon drawn and was startled to see the officer standing with gun drawn on two people… she needs serious retraining ,, who responds to a shot fired call and enter a room without weapon in hand ,,,>>>
