LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary’s County Public Schools announces the selection of Ms. Sabra Szczyglowski, a Physical Education Teacher at Evergreen Elementary School, as its 2015-2016 representative for the Maryland State Department of Education Teacher of the Year program.
“Ms. Szczyglowski is committed to providing a quality physical education program to her students. She consistently sets high standards for her students and is an integral part of the healthy and fit school community. Parents, students and staff value her knowledge and respect her ability to motivate and inspire” said J. Scott Smith, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “She is very deserving of this recognition and will represent St. Mary’s County well.”
In her letter of support, Kim Summers, Principal of Evergreen Elementary stated, “Sabra is the quiet but strong leader who colleagues are happy to follow and wish to emulate. Her ‘can do’ attitude is contagious to those who know and work with her. She is always the first to volunteer to help a student, colleague or administrator. Sabra is the one we all want on our team, the one standing beside us and the one we know will not only advocate for but represent SMCPS in an admirable and professional manner…she is the epitome of everything SMCPS stands for and is most deserving of the title of Teacher of the Year.”
Ms. Szczyglowski earned her Bachelor of Science from Youngstown State University and her Masters of Science from Towson University. She received the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) 2011 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award, the 2004 MAHPERD Simon McNeely Award, and the National Association for Sports and Physical Education Elementary School Physical Education 2012 Eastern District Teacher of the Year Award to name just a few of her accolades.
All county Teacher of the Year representatives will be honored by the Maryland State Board of Education at a recognition luncheon held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 in Baltimore. Ms. Szczyglowski will represent St. Mary’s County as a candidate for Maryland Teacher of the Year. This award will be announced at the Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala in Baltimore on October 9, 2015.
The Maryland Teacher of Year will be presented with several prizes, will speak at numerous conferences and events, and will act as an advisor to the Maryland State Department of Education. The Maryland Teacher of the Year is also a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.
