CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a recent scam in which individuals falsely claim to represent the Calvert County Detention Center.

These suspects are contacting family members of incarcerated individuals and insisting that bail or bond money must be paid immediately for their loved one’s release.

Scammers are demanding payment through platforms such as Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, and even gift cards. These payment methods are common red flags in fraudulent schemes.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and the Calvert County Detention Center want to remind the public that no deputy, officer, or employee will ever contact you to request money, payment information, or digital transfers for bail, bond, or any other service. All legitimate bail or bond transactions occur in person and follow established legal procedures.

We urge residents to share this information with friends, family members, and especially those who may be more vulnerable to these tactics. If you receive a suspicious call or message of this nature:

• Do not send money or provide personal information.

• Hang up immediately.

• Contact the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office at (410) 535-2800

to verify any claims or report suspicious activity.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting our community and ensuring residents do not fall victim to scams like these. Stay alert, stay informed, and help us spread the word.
