CALIFORNIA, Md. – On Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, the Special Olympics Maryland–St. Mary’s County organization held its annual cycling finals at Oak Crest Properties in California, Maryland. Athletes competed in 500-meter races, 1K and 2K time trials, as well as 5K, 10K, and 15K road races that they have been preparing for all year.

Event participants aren’t necessarily competing against one another but are working to beat their personal bests from previous events. John Spinicchia, assistant coach for the program, said, “The fact that these activities are designed so that our athletes compare their performance to their own past performance, and for each athlete to give their personal best is powerful to witness. There is, however, some friendly competitiveness that goes on.”

This event is significant for the athletes, and many participants look forward to it each year. “The competition being held in St. Mary’s allowed some folks to participate in this event that usually don’t due to the distance or other things where past events were held,” Spinicchia said. “Some of our folks have balance issues, so by providing trikes, they got to participate in a meaningful way. We provide most of the bicycles for our athletes through generous donations, which also allows for participation.”

This event would not be possible without the coaches and staff of the Special Olympics Maryland–St. Mary’s County organization, as well as the athletes’ dedication and positive attitudes. “Every single Special Olympics athlete at this event gives their very best and makes us so proud,” Spinicchia said.
