BALTIMORE — The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Friday evening for a large portion of the Mid-Atlantic region, warning residents of potentially severe weather through midnight.
The tornado watch, issued at 5:01 p.m. EDT, May 30, 2025, covers the District of Columbia, 14 counties in Maryland, and 16 counties in Virginia. It remains in effect until 12 a.m. Friday, May 31.
In Maryland, areas under watch span from urban centers like Baltimore and Rockville to Southern Maryland communities including Prince Frederick and Leonardtown. Virginia localities include Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties, as well as cities such as Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Alexandria.
The alert encompasses a wide array of municipalities and suburban communities, from Chesapeake Beach and Waldorf to Hagerstown and Leesburg. Forecasters say conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.
Residents are urged to remain alert, review safety plans, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued.
The watch is part of a broader storm system moving through the region, prompting scattered thunderstorms and increased risk of rapidly shifting weather patterns.
