LA PLATA, Md. — Spring fever is here, and for Maryland’s anglers, that can only mean one thing: trout season.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has once again rolled out its interactive trout stocking map, a digital tool that’s fast becoming the go-to guide for anyone with a rod, reel, and a little patience. With real-time updates and click-to-reveal features, the map puts trout hotspots right at your fingertips—no guesswork, just fish.

The 2025 trout stocking is already well underway, with recent activity in Southern Maryland making waves. Here’s a look at the some of the most recent stocks in our neck of the woods:

Calvert County:

  • Calvert Cliffs Pond – Stocked on Feb. 5 with 270 rainbow trout and March 13 with 500 rainbow trout.
  • Hutchins Pond– Stocked on March 13 with 500 rainbow trout.

Charles County:

  • Myrtle Grove Pond – Stocked on Feb. 4 with 400 rainbow trout and March 4 with 880 rainbow trout.
  • Wheatley Lake – Stocked on Feb. 4 with 800 rainbow trout and March 4 with 704 rainbow trout.
  • Hughesville Pond – Stocked on March 13 with 300 rainbow trout.

The map also helps anglers plan around closures. For example, Closure Period 1 shut down certain put-and-take areas from March 9 to March 29 this year, allowing DNR staff to prepare sites with fresh fish and optimal conditions.

And for those looking to cast a wider net beyond stocked trout? The state’s freshwater fishing hotspots include legendary waters like Big Hunting Creek and Cunningham Falls Reservoir—both offering serenity and plenty of bite.

Even if you don’t have a license, Maryland has you covered with several license-free fishing areas to help new anglers get their feet wet—literally.

So whether you’re an experienced angler or just looking for a peaceful way to enjoy the outdoors, Maryland’s stocked waters are calling. Time to answer—with tackle box in hand.
