Prince Frederick, MD โ Volunteer firefighters from Prince Frederick (Company 2) and Huntingtown (Company 6) were dispatched to the Calvert Memorial Hospital (CMH) Emergency Room Sunday evening, Nov. 30 shortly after 8 p.m., local fire officials reported.
According to a story posted on the Company 6 web site and written by Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe, a small fire occurred in the emergency roomโs soiled linens closet.ย
Riffe reported that the fire โhad been knocked down by the building suppression system and staff.โ The firefighters โset up fans for horizontal ventilation and checked for extension with the thermal imaging camera.โ
Riffe reported the units were dispatched after receiving a โspecial box alert.โ
According to CMH spokeswoman Kasia Sweeney, emergency room staff detected a “burning smell” coming from the closet.ย
“Upon investigation it was discovered the smoke was coming from a small trashcan in the closet,” Sweeney stated. “Nursing staff responded promptly activating the fire alarm and using a fire extinguisher to extinguish the source. No patients or staff were injured and we appreciate the prompt response and support of the Prince Frederick and Huntingtown fire departments who verified that the source of the smoke was properly extinguished and there was no further cause for concern.”
