WALDORF, Md. – The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a June 5, 2024, house fire in Waldorf that originated in the attic of a Needlefish Court residence.

Despite the efforts of 50 firefighters primarily from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, it took approximately 50 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Crews continued to extinguish residual hot spots, with SMECO summoned to secure the power supply.

A firefighter initially reported as injured only suffered from heat exhaustion. He was treated and released from UM Charles Regional Medical Center a few hours later. No serious injuries were sustained during the incident.

Investigation shows estimated losses include $250,000 for the structure and $50,000 for its contents. Functioning smoke alarms likely played a crucial role in alerting occupants and aiding in the prompt response of emergency services.

One adult has been displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the blaze remains undetermined, and authorities are working to ascertain its origin and any contributing factors.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
