PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — In the aftermath of Dr. Andraé Townsel’s resignation as the superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS), Dr. Susan Johnson will take the reins — at least for now.
Dr. Johnson is serving as the acting superintendent as Townsel prepares to depart for his new role as the superintendent of Hartford Public Schools in Hartford, Connecticut. Johnson currently works as the chief operations officer for the district and was appointed in 2024 after serving as the assistant superintendent of instruction and other roles.
“It is a privilege to serve as acting superintendent for Calvert County Public Schools while the Board of Education members determine who will be the interim superintendent,” she wrote in an email to The BayNet.
Karen Maxey, CCPS administrative assistant to the Board of Education (BOE), confirmed Johnson’s temporary role. She added that the board plans to appoint an interim superintendent at their upcoming Aug. 7 meeting, who will be responsible for all the duties of the superintendent until a permanent replacement is found. The board also announced an unscheduled, closed meeting for July 17 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss administrative matters.
Maxey also said there are currently “no updates” on the search for a new permanent superintendent at this time.
Townsel was hired, appointed and confirmed in a several-month-long process — if the hiring process for the next superintendent follows the same pattern, it’s likely the district won’t have a full-time replacement by the start of the 2025–26 school year.
Townsel replaced Dr. Daniel Curry in 2022 and is leaving two years before his term is set to expire in 2026.
