Each year, thousands of Calvert County students will learn about their connection to the natural environment through their CHESPAX lessons and field experiences.ย  Students and staff are also learning that making a positive difference for the natural environment can begin the moment that they step through the doors of their local school.

An initiative of the Calvert County Public Schools to conserve natural resources within schools and other facilities is underway.ย  The project began through collaboration between the Department of School Facilities and the Department of Instruction.ย ย  The objective is to raise awareness among students and staff about the importance of saving electricity, recycling, water conservation, and other practices important to a healthier planet.ย  Such efforts are also important from an economic standpoint, as costs associated with the consumption of natural resources represent a significant portion of the school system budget.

Each school will receive some resources to help roll out the initiative, including a video that can be presented in classrooms to students and tools that can be used to monitor progress on the conservation effort.ย  A large vinyl pledge banner (see above image) is being presented to each school to serve as a visual reminder of the importance of natural resource conservation.
