Charles County Sheriff Rex W. Coffey and the men and women of the CCSO are deeply saddened to announce the untimely death of Sgt. Robert Taylor #289 who passed away suddenly on June 26 while vacationing with his family in Mexico. A medical examiner ruled Sgt. Taylor, 46, died of natural causes.ย 

Sgt. Taylor, a 24-year-veteran of the CCSO, was assigned to the Traffic Operations/Motors Unit where he investigated motor vehicle crashes, conducted traffic safety operations and assisted in other special details.

Sgt. Taylor began his career with the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office in December 1988 where he served as a correctional officer at the Charles County Detention Center. In August 1997, he transferred to the sworn side of the CCSO and served as a patrol officer. And in January 2005, Sgt. Taylor was transferred to the Traffic Operations/Motors Unit.

Sheriff Coffey said Sgt. Taylor was a remarkable man who loved his family, his job and the community he served. ย โ€œHis passing is shocking to all of us who valued his friendship and admired his professionalism. He will be sorely missed.โ€ย 

Sgt. Taylorโ€™s colleagues said he was an officer who was dedicated to safety.ย  โ€œRob cared about our county and he was especially committed to keeping our roadways safe. No matter if he was working speed enforcement assignments, inspecting commercial trucks for safety violations, conducting sobriety check points or checking car seats, Rob took his job seriously and had positive encounters with everyone he met,โ€ said Cpl. Shayne Stanley, a co-worker in Sgt. Taylorโ€™s unit.ย ย 

Many in the community recognized Sgt. Taylor as the officer with a nice smile and friendly face. Time and time again, residents complimented Sgt. Taylor and often referred to him as the officer with a kind heart. He loved riding his motorcycle and never passed up an opportunity to wave to passersby or talk with inquisitive youngsters and other folks who were interested in the Motors Unit. ย ย ย 

Sgt. Taylorโ€™s wife, Tiffany, said, โ€œRobert was an amazing husband, daddy, son, brother and friend. He had a heart of gold and was admired by many. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always willing to help others whether he was on or off duty. He admired his two beautiful children and cherished every moment he had with them. Our hearts are breaking for our loss of such an incredible person. He will be missed beyond expression.โ€

In honor of Sgt. Taylor, the Charles County flag and the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office flag will be flown at half-staff.ย  In addition, his patrol car is being displayed in front of the District I station on Crain Highway in La Plata. All three district stations are
