Calvert County Dep. N. Funchion was involved in a motor vehicle crash in his departmental vehicle today at approximately 1:00 p.m. Jan. 10, 2011 while attempting to stop a leaking propane truck on southbound Md. Route 4 at Fowler Road in Owings.
Another truck, also headed southbound, struck Dep. Funchion’s patrol vehicle in the rear, causing significant damage to both vehicles, as Dep. Funchion crossed traffic from lane 2. No injuries were reported by the deputy or the driver of the other truck.
The propane truck was subsequently located and is currently being inspected by Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Dep. J. Dean and the Department of the Environment. The driver of the propane truck was cited by a commercial vehicle enforcement unit for numerous violations. Lt. R. Thomas and members of the Special Operations Team are on scene to assess the HAZMAT aspect of this incident. Sgt. Brian McCourt is investigating the departmental crash.
