On Jan. 16, at 1:13 p.m., Tpr. E. Page responded to the Family Dollar in the Leonardtown Centre for a reported theft.
While responding to the theft, a lookout was given for a primer gray Chevrolet truck leaving a store and heading south on Point Lookout Road. The vehicle was located and stopped on Point Lookout Road at Lawrence Avenue in Leonardtown.
Contact was made with the operator and the passenger, John Fitzgerald Butler, 44 of Leonardtown. Butler was in possession of a bag of Hershey’s candy, valued $2.92 which he had stolen from the Family Dollar. An employee of the Family Dollar was able to identify Butler and he was taken into custody and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with theft under $100 and incarcerated pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner.
