On June 9 at 4:56 a.m., members of the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Route 4 in the area of Brickhouse Road in Dunkirk.

Investigation revealed that Deputy Johnny Coates was operating a marked Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office marked patrol vehicle while off-duty when he struck the guardrail on the northbound side ofย Route 4. The vehicle then crossed the median at Brickhouse Road, struck a culvert, a tree, then a brick pillar and came to rest overturned on the brick sign for Dunkirk Animal Hospital.

Coates was transported viaย Maryland State Policeย helicopter to Baltimore Shock Trauma, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.ย The investigation is continuing.
