Annapolis, Md. – The Senate Republican Caucus issued the following statement following the passage of the FY26 Operating Budget and Budget Reconciliation Act (BRFA).

“The passage of the FY26 Maryland Budget and the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act (BRFA) marks a deeply concerning moment for our state. With over $1.6 billion in new or increased taxes, this represents the largest tax hike in Maryland history—a staggering burden on working families, small businesses, and retirees already struggling with inflation and economic uncertainty.

Instead of reining in wasteful spending and reforming bloated agencies, the Democratic majority has chosen to raise taxes across the board to fund an ever-expanding government. This budget is built on short-term thinking, questionable priorities, and a blatant disregard for the financial well-being of everyday Marylanders.

Republicans offered responsible alternatives—making enough commonsense cuts to balance the budget without reaching into taxpayers’ wallets.

Marylanders are not an ATM for Annapolis. We need budgets that respect taxpayers, grow our economy, and protect future generations from debt and decline. This budget does the opposite. It’s a massive step in the wrong direction, and we will continue to fight for common-sense, conservative solutions that put Marylanders first.”
