fatal accident in southern maryland

INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A 27-year-old Virginia man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Dec. 22, 2025, along Indian Head Highway in Charles County.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack and emergency personnel responded around 5:32 p.m. to Maryland Route 210 at Crestwood Place for a reported collision involving two vehicles. The driver of a Nissan Altima, identified as Benjamin Ruschell Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Toyota FJ Cruiser operated by a 28-year-old man, was transported by ambulance to an area trauma center for treatment of injuries.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Nissan was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 210 for reasons that remain under investigation when it struck the Toyota head-on. Police said speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Multiple lanes of Indian Head Highway were closed for more than two hours while investigators processed the scene.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation.
