PORT TOBACCO, Md. — Residents are invited to join the next Walk Charles County event on Saturday, June 22, at 10 a.m. at Port Tobacco River Park, where nature, education and community wellness converge for a family-friendly outdoor experience.
The Charles County Department of Health, in collaboration with local environmental partners, will host this free event as part of an ongoing initiative to promote health and engagement through walking tours of local parks.
Representatives from the Southern Maryland Audubon Society and the Port Tobacco River Conservancy will provide an educational talk about the park’s unique history, ecological restoration and the bald eagles that nest along the river. Attendees will learn about the park’s transformation into a protected area for wildlife and its role in local conservation efforts.
This walk follows several successful past events hosted at other parks throughout Charles County, including Gilbert Run Park, Pisgah Park and Friendship Farm Park, which took place earlier this spring.

- June 22 (Sunday), 10 a.m. – Port Tobacco River Park, Port Tobacco, Md.
- July 19 (Saturday), 10 a.m. – Middletown Road Trailhead, Indian Head Rail Trail, White Plains, Md.
- Aug. 17 (Sunday), 9 a.m. – Laurel Springs Park, La Plata, Md.
- Sept. 20 (Saturday), 1 p.m. – Maxwell Hall Park, Hughesville, Md.
Each walk features a different park and offers participants a chance to learn more about local history, nature and public health resources.
“Walk Charles County” events are designed to encourage community engagement, healthy habits and appreciation for the county’s natural spaces.
