CHARLES COUNTY, Md. – For Black History Month, we have been sharing some of our African American employees who are making a positive difference here in Charles County.

Today meet Officer Eric Otey Jr. Officer Otey is currently assigned to Judicial Services and his duties include serving arrest warrants relating to civil and criminal cases including child support and domestic violence.

Before joining the CCSO, Officer Otey graduated from Salisbury University and went on to become a high school history teacher for eight years in Dorchester County where he, his wife, and three daughters lived. They eventually moved to Charles County to be closer to extended family. Though he enjoyed teaching, Officer Otey thought his skills would suit him for a job as a police officer in a county he loved. We couldn’t agree more! He joined the CCSO in 2022.

Officer Otey says his father is his biggest influence and set the path for his success. “My dad has been a mentor and coach in his community for decades and he showed me the importance of getting involved and giving back to make a positive difference.” Officer Otey learned from a young age that ‘not all people are the same, and sometimes you need to meet people where they are when it comes to being a positive influence.’ His father also taught him that to make a difference, you have to live your life as an example for others to follow.

Outside of work, Officer Otey has been a high school football coach at Bishop McNamara for 20 years. “Coaching allows me to continue to influence young athletes in the community in a positive way. It also allows me to put down the uniform and be able to mentor kids through coaching. I strongly believe that being available and showing our youth that doing the ‘Right Things’ is not a thing of the past.” In addition, Officer Otey attends New Life Church in La Plata and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
