
LA PLATA, Md. – A local family was displaced after their home caught fire on the evening of February 5, 2024.
The fire, which started at approximately 7:52 p.m., was reported by a 911 caller who stated that the roof of the residence was on fire. The occupants of the home, two adults and three children, had safely evacuated by the time rescue personnel arrived on the scene.

Firefighters arrived on Ripley Way near Hawthorne Road to find the home filled with smoke. They were able to extinguish the fire within 40 minutes. SMECO was requested to the scene to secure the power to the home.
The Red Cross has been notified and is assisting the displaced family. No injuries have been reported to the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Initial findings suggest it was an accidental electrical fire.
