PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — An 88-year-old woman was injured Tuesday morning when a car jumped a curb and crashed into a storefront at the Market Square shopping center, striking her inside the business.

Emergency personnel and troopers from the Prince Frederick Barrack were dispatched at about 10:29 a.m. Oct. 21 to the 300 block of Market Square for a report of a vehicle into the Verizon Wireless store. According to a preliminary investigation, an 84-year-old man in a Toyota Camry had been parked in a space directly in front of the shop when, for reasons still under review, the car suddenly accelerated, crossed the raised curb and smashed through the glass. The woman, who was seated inside, was hit and injured.

The victim was taken by ambulance to the UM Capital Regional Medical Center. The driver was not reported injured. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the active investigation, and no charges had been announced as of Wednesday.

On scene Tuesday, shattered safety glass spanned the storefront and display cases were displaced across the sales floor. Firefighters told The BayNet the driver said his foot slipped from the brake to the accelerator. The vehicle traveled through the showroom and struck windows on the opposite end of the building before coming to a stop. Crews requested a building inspector after multiple interior walls were hit; the business remained closed while hazards were checked and the area secured.

In separate recent incidents, a vehicle hit Nick’s of Clinton in Waldorf on Oct. 14, 2025; no injuries were reported and the store reopened by 10 a.m. the next morning following inspections. Earlier this year, on Aug. 13, a car damaged the glass frontage at Story Cannabis in Waldorf with no hospitalizations reported, and on Aug. 14, a silver Ford SUV shattered the front glass of a T-Mobile in Lexington Park without major structural damage.

These reports add to a series of storefront collisions documented in Southern Maryland in 2025.
